Legend claims that the smoking process was discovered by accident. During the Qing dynasty, an army unit passing through Xiangchun camped in a tea factory filled with fresh leaves awaiting processing. When the workers were allowed back onto the premises, they realized it was too late to dry the leaves in the usual way if they were to make it to market. So they lit open fires of pine wood to hasten the drying. The smoked pine flavor created a sensation! Depending on one’s palate the taste can be light and intriguing or it can be heavy and overpowering. Lapsang Souchong is best described as an acquired taste and is generally consumed with sugar or milk. Drinking herbal tea, green tea, black tea, rooibos tea or oolong tea regularly has been shown to have many health benefits such as helping to lose weight, boost immunity, reduce stress, decrease cancer risks and reduce chances of getting a heart attack. Lapsang Souchong is a special Chinese black tea. This tea produces a reddish hue liquor with a smooth crisp taste and a smoky aroma of pine wood fire. The Lapsang Souchong is considered to be heavy and overpowering by many. The method of production for this tea is the following: The leaves are first withered over fires of pine wood. After pan-frying and rolling, they are presses into wooden barrels and covered with cloth to ferment until they give off a pleasant fragrance. The leaves are fired again and rolled into taut strips. Then they are placed in bamboo baskets and hung on wooden racks over smoking pine fires to dry and absorb the smoke flavor.

Numi Tea’s Smoky Tarry Lapsang Souchong Black Tea is a premium tea, both certified organic and kosher. The only ingredient is fair trade high quality Lapsang Souchong Std. 8310. There is nothing artificial in this or in any Numi tea.

Why did I give this tea only 4 stars out of 5? Because as wonderful a tea as it is (and it IS an outstanding tea), I cannot drink it at all. The name “Smoky Tarry” says it all—it is very smoky, and very tarry, tasting to me somewhat like bacon. It was one of the most unpleasant tastes I’ve ever experienced. That said, if you like Lapsang Souchong, I don’t think you’ll find better. Or if you are adventurous and want something different, then this is it!

On the box, the manufacturer writes: “Lapsang Souchong is grown in a nature preserve located high in China’s beautiful Wu Yi Mountains, whose thick pine forests and heavy mist provide an exceptional environment for growing tea. Traditionally smoked over the embers of White Fir, this evocative honey colored organic tea has a pungent smoky aroma that opens the palate to foods. Like a sip of fine cognac, it awakens and transports the senses, enticing you to savor its depth. Drink in the intensity of Lapsang!” Well, if you’re so inclined, give it a try; it is a very fine tea of this type.

If you are new to Numi but love Lapsang Souchong tea, this will probably be the best you’ve ever had—Numi quality is incredible!
